Rejuvenating Limestone Track Vineyard

A Labour of Love and Renewal

If you’ve been wondering where we’ve been lately, the answer lies amidst the vines—or rather, where the vines used to be.

We’ve been hard at work rejuvenating Limestone Track Vineyard, undertaking the monumental task of clearing the old to make way for the new. It’s been a journey of reflection, labour, and anticipation as we prepare this cherished land for its next chapter.

Saying Goodbye to the Old

This vineyard has stood the test of time, with some vines over 25 years old. These stalwarts of the landscape have given their all over the years, producing memorable vintages and carrying the essence of this unique terroir. But,their time had come. Yields were declining, and the vibrancy in the fruit no longer reflected the full potential of the soil.

Deciding to remove these vines wasn’t easy. There’s a profound connection to the history embedded in them—the stories, the seasons, and the hands that nurtured them. However, letting go was necessary to ensure the vineyard’s legacy continues to thrive.

Clearing the Decks: Vines and Trellising

Removing the old vines was only the first step. Alongside them came the task of dismantling the trellising that had supported their growth for decades. This process was as symbolic as it was physical—a total reset. Posts and wire, was carefully removed and posts repaired leaving the ground clean and ready for a fresh start.

While the vineyard may look bare now, I see it as an open slate brimming with potential. Without the old structures in place, we can reimagine the layout, implement modern trellising techniques, and set the stage for healthier, more productive vines.

Preparing the Soil for Replanting

With the vines and trellising cleared, attention turned to the soil. Limestone soils are a gift, imparting a unique minerality and structure to the wines grown here. However, decades of growth had taken their toll, so restoring and rejuvenating the soil became a priority.

First, we conducted soil analyses to understand its current condition. From there, we enriched it with organic matter and balanced the pH. Deep tilling helped break up compacted layers, ensuring the roots of future vines will have an easier path downward to access nutrients and moisture.

The Vision for the Future

Rejuvenating a vineyard isn’t just about preparing the land—it’s about envisioning its future. The new vines we’ll plant will be chosen with care, matching their varietals and clones to the limestone terroir while considering sustainability and climate resilience.

New trellising systems will follow, designed to optimise sunlight exposure, airflow, and vine health. It’s an opportunity to modernise and align with best practices that respect the land and maximise its potential.

This transformation is about more than just vines—it’s about honouring the past while investing in the future. It’s about creating a space where the land can thrive again, where the wines will tell new stories, and where the cycle of life continues with fresh energy and vitality.

Stay tuned as Limestone Track begins its next chapter. We can’t wait to share the fruits of this labour with you in the years to come.

Cheers to new beginnings!
